When is alcohol a problem? Asking for a friend.
From one marathon mother's misunderstanding to a drinking problem and the hardest working item in your wardrobe. Welcome to your weekly dose of MID-spo.
It turns out we got it wrong about that viral ‘marathon mum’
Holly Wainwright writes: For a few days in the middle of a torrid news-cycle, the Internet’s collective wrath was unleashed on a man who took his children to cheer on their mother as she won a half-marathon in Brazil.
The bait was a short video of Luciana Grandi Lourenção nearing the finish line in her town's running festival. Her husband Pedro sees her and ushers their two little girls onto the road to greet her and Luciana swerves past them to win her race.
Are you one of the more than nine million people who have watched it? (See it here)
The Internet had a great many thoughts about this moment, and none of them were very positive about Pedro.
What a clueless, entitled prick, the Internet said.
How indicative of marriage, the Internet said, that this man was so eager to be done "babysitting" after an hour and 40 minutes, he couldn't wait to turn those kids back over to their mother.
How typical, the Internet said, that this doofus thinks the kids should trump any further achievement of this hard-working woman.
Pah. We all said. Men. Am I right?
Well, looks like we weren't right, this time.
Because the actual, real life people behind this short clip have posted their own response, in the form of a video….. Continue Reading
How do you know if you’re drinking too much?
Most Gen X-ers did not grow up idolising 5am-rising yoga girlies. For many of us, drinking "like the boys" was almost an act of feminist pride, and certainly the way we knew we were having a "good time".
Holidays, celebrations, milestones. Wine o’clock, and the witching hour and the glass (or two) that marks the end of the work day... Alcohol is woven into our social lives in an almost invisible way. So what happens when you realise that the habit you thought of as your little helper is actually making everything worse?
On this week’s episode of the MID podcast, we're talking to Shanna Whan from Sober In The Country about why Generation X women drink so damn much. Shanna says that 90% of the people who seek support from her peer-to-peer organisation are women aged between 40 and 60. That's us, friends.
So why do Gen X women drink so damn much? How do you know if you’ve got a problem? And if it isn't you you're worried about, how do you talk to people in your life about their drinking? Have a listen to MID this week - so many women have reached out to say thank you for this episode….. and you can also read Shanna’s personal story here.

MID-SPO STYLE: The hardest working shoe in your wardrobe
The term “classic” is over-used in fashion. Are skinny jeans a ‘classic’? They are not. However this label is absolutely accurate for the black loafer. They look particularly good with a cropped pant or jean and while wearing them with a floaty dress was very much a 90s moment, they can look a bit fresher with a shorter skirt - knee-length or above.
WATCH OUT: The chunky loafer is more classic and modern than a less chunky version which can be a bit meh. Wearing it with a white ankle sock is a high level of difficulty at our age, without looking like you’re cos-playing a schoolgirl but socks are having such a damn moment, by all means give it a whirl. A black sock (as seen in the above example) can be a smart alternative.
We’ve rounded up some good options here including this pair from Target for $40
